We want to let you know that a familiar part of the Community Center Garden recently received a new beginning. The bridge near the garden’s fishpond has served as a favorite photo spot for weddings, graduations, and so many other special moments and events.  The original bridge has been replaced after years of weather and use left it aged and deteriorated.

When planning the replacement, District staff explored several options, but none effectively captured the character and familiar appearance of the original. Instead, the District turned to its own team to complete the renovation. 

“We wanted to preserve more than just the function of the bridge,” said BCMUD Parks and Facilities Manager Rachel Leonard. “We wanted to preserve its character and the sense of place it had created over the years.” 

Construction lasted two weeks and concluded at the end of August 2026. Using in-house expertise and labor allowed the District to significantly reduce costs while maintaining the quality and craftsmanship of the finished product. The new bridge also includes ADA improvements for added safety and easier access from the garden trail.

Led by BCMUD Utility Services Technician Ronnie Young, staff used raw cedar and other natural materials to recreate the bridge while incorporating unique variations in color and texture to retain its traditional aesthetic.

Ronnie’s years of construction experience didn’t just lead to a high-quality reconstruction of the bridge. His valuable knowledge has also inspired opportunities to share some of his expertise with the community. Starting with a 101 workshop at an upcoming BC METS (Meet, Eat, Train, Socialize) event to be determined, District staff are exploring future programming that would feature quality construction techniques and practical tips from Ronnie.

From preserving familiar places to finding thoughtful, cost-effective ways to improve them, projects like this are a small part of how we help maintain the Brushy Creek Life. We look forward to seeing you at the bridge!
